Hanging Jamón & Tiny Service Stations

IMG_9506

Last week Alex gamely came along with me to look for an address on a cheque (that we never found) and was his cheerful self as we continued to lose and find ourselves in the business district. We stopped for lunch at Museo del Jamón, where I had croquettas for the first time in a long time. Since it was such a nice, sunny day out, we decided to walk most of the way back down to Conde de Casal before we had to catch the bus back.  Continue reading

Went/Saw/Did

IMG_9161This weekend was good. I mean good. In the way that you know it’s good as it’s happening and it makes you smile just because it’s happening and it’s happening to you and you can’t think of anywhere else you’d rather be in that moment. How the lights seem to be extra bright or lines not too long or the swarm of people not too pressing even though you know, normally, you’d probably be freaking out, just a little.  Continue reading

Europe: The Reaction .Gif Edition

So I did a thing. Your regularly scheduled program (or not so regularly scheduled program, however you want to describe this programming) has been interrupted and is instead replaced with reaction .gifs! Originally this was going to be cut into two parts, one part specifically dealing with French reactions and the other general European reactions, but then it all got super mixed in together and so I just Kanye shrugged and let it. I’ll still probably do a follow up to this because reactions to a lot of stuff I say/do/see/etc is quite gif-reaction-able and that should be shared because funny things should always be shared.

When you first realized you’d have to pay to use  some washrooms:

Little Fun

It’s been gorgeous around here lately. The sun has barely stopped shining (knock on wood) and we’ve been taking advantage of it as much as possible.

Last week I went to visit my friend, Katie, who is also an au pair, and her two little guys and I honestly can’t remember the last time I had had that much fun. Not big fun, but little fun.

Little fun: cooking lunch with someone else. Bundling up the boys and sending them outside while we drank tea in front of the fireplace. Going for a long walk. Building a snow igloo…thing. Snow angels. Snow diving. Drinking hot chocolate and failing at making crepes. All the little things that, on their own may not seem like a lot, may not seem like fun, but when done with the right people you find that’s exactly what they are.

“Deep down I believe my year was a special year: it produced me.” – Ned Vizzini

Yesterday was my birthday. The big 2-1. I have a weird relationship with my birthday. Like I like my birthday (who doesn’t?) but it also just feels weird to be the centre of attention. Or maybe that’s just me.

Yesterday morning we made cake (kiwi, with cream cheese frosting) and had chicken for dinner, cake for dessert, magic candles that we all tried blowing out and lovely messages throughout the day from all my friends. Met up for coffee with my friend Chynna, who brought a candle out of her purse and lit it while singing happy birthday in front of my little guy who just looked at her in confusion. Because we didn’t have time for cake, she had gotten macaroons and we had those instead. Tonight, she and another one of our friends and I are going to be making chicken fajitas and it sounds like they have something else planned.

So you know, I guess it’s not so bad to be the centre of attention every once in awhile. I can handle it once a year.
