Studio Work

So the third issue of The Pioneer that my classmates and I put together can be found here, with my story on page 5.

It was the first time in a long time that I’d been in the studio, and I’d really almost….missed it. Something about being able to control all of the elements in a photo is something that makes you feel proud of your end result, knowing that you were the one making it happen.

And here are some other shots we tried:

Today was another one of those ‘get all the things done!’ type of days I’m coming to really like. I don’t want to jinx anything, so I’ll hold off spilling the beans until things are concrete, but, it was one of those good days you feel happy about at the end of.

Oh! And I fulfilled my commitment to try and shoot more sports. So basketball shots will be headed within the next few days. From what I could tell on my screen (lol, worst thing to judge a picture on, really), I might have actually done a decent job.

Things I’m Loving:

+  Ten Best Food Blogs to Bookmark – I think I actually had about half of these bookmarked to begin with, but the others were a wonderful treat to go check out. And food photography? Will always be some of my favourite photography to look at.

+ A-Z of Personal Style – Things are just made so much simpler when put in an A-Z format. As well, we always seem to forget the simple things, and this points them all out.

+ Silence Over Gay Footballers – “There are currently around 5,000 professional footballers in Britain, but none are openly gay. Amal Fashanu, niece of Justin Fashanu, asks why no gay player has followed in her uncle’s boots in nearly 25 years.” Such a compelling read, and, asks a very intriguing question.

+ Coffee With That Outfit – Coffee coloured pieces for a wonderfully relaxed, and slightly man inspired, outfit. I want those pants in my life for this spring.

Garfield Was Right About Mondays

You know what’s terrible? Not starting out the week properly. With a list of things to do and being late for class and feeling like, even though it’s only the start of the week, you’re already so far behind. (Alright, switch out ‘you’re’ and add ‘I’m’ and that’ll be more accurate.)

However! Then I went all ‘super-journalism-woman’ in the newsroom today and voila! Pictures were taken, phone calls were made, articles were written, finished, edited. And that made me feel like I was back on track. Even if I still have a grossly long list of things to do….-sigh-

I know, not the best sports photography (and when will people realize that any sort of gym is just utter crap for pictures?), but, it is something that I’m working on, so, I’m using this as my starting point, to come back to in a few months and see how I’ve advanced (or how far I haven’t, which I’d rather not think about…)

Tomorrow is another issue of The Pioneer going live, so I’ll have the studio (!!! another thing I very rarely do) photos up, along with the story. Here’s to another busy week!

Things I’m Loving:

+ WPS 2012 Season Cancelled(1, 2, 3)  – Okay, so this one is an utter lie and I don’t love it, at all. Considering the fact that, just yesterday, was the last day of the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifiers in Vancouver, which drew a record breaking crowd for women’s soccer. But, hopefully my WPS will be back, and stronger!, next season!

+ Seeing Red – An interesting read on why soccer should be Canada’s sport. Beautifully written, with history and colourful writing. What more can you ask for?

+ Shooters Creed – What do photographers believe in? This photographers creed gives a bit of a hint.

+ Chai Shortbread Cookies – I love shortbread cookies. Hands down my favourite. Not only that, but chai is my favourite kind of tea. So, basically: Best. Cookies. Ever.

Kitchen Picnic

I told you I’d come with pictures. And I did! (See, I can keep my word!)

Shots from our get together on Monday. We’ve gone from having full out, house full, slightly loud pot lucks, to sitting on the kitchen floor, fairly quiet meals. Which is basically delicious and helps clean out the fridge. Afterwards there’s never ending cups of tea and movies (A Clockwork Orange anybody?).

Things I’m Loving:

+ Famous Photographers Posed With Their Most Famous Photographs – An interesting project that shows the photographers with their photographs (which, really, is the title). Mostly because nobody ever really puts a face to the picture. As well, it gives their thoughts on the picture and whatnot. Just quite interesting, really.

+ Boy by Band of Outsiders – I don’t wear labels, have never worn labels, and highly doubt I will really wear too many in the near future. However, Boy by Band of Outsiders? On my luuuust list. (Except maybe #15, tbh. #17 however, I’d wear all day, every day (maybe every other day…)).

+ Nutella Filled Sugar Donuts –  I like making my own food and one day I will make my own donuts. And when I do, these will be the first ones I make. However, with the amount of time I don’t have to dedicate to baking, I’ll just stop off at Tim’s on my way to class.

+ Five to Watch at ACoN 2012 – If you didn’t know, the Africa Cup of Nations is going on right now. Which means, yay! scouts from clubs are roaming with check books for new blood. Here’s a bit of a start to see who they’re looking at (and who a new face might be in your club).

Between the Shops

I actually have images to show…tomorrow. But, right now, it’s late, I’m watching the Canadian Women’s National (Soccer) Team playing against Costa Rica’s WNT, and the thought that I still have to upload/edit all those photos is just not appealing. (Not to mention the fact that opening Photoshop would mean my stream would probably stutter, which is so not cool.)

So, instead, I’m going to leave you with a video. A silly/random/bizarre video, but a video nonetheless. That I did for class. Based on the alleys of town. (I told you it was silly/random/bizarre.)

Between the Shops from Amielle Christopherson on Vimeo.

Things I’m Loving:

+ Karina LeBlanc – The goal keeper for #CanWNT (shhhh. I’ve been tweeting it all weekend. Don’t judge.) has, quite seriously, the most rocking hair. I mean, the rest of her is rocking as well (as is her personality), but her hair? Giving me some serious hair envy.

[Random Note: before/at the beginning of any football matches, I always congratulate the players on their fab hair. And yet, the men get more compliments than the girls. I feel like something needs to be explained here… #iamashallowbastard]

+ Watch Out, Boys – An article from a dad with a little girl who loves superheroes, who asks the question, “What do you do with a little kid who loves super-ladies?” Lovely read, really.

+ Dress Shirt Dress Up – I like guy’s clothes more than most girls. (Ask my sister. She wants me to go into therapy.) So how to dress up a men’s dress shirt for the females? Ace article in my books.

+ MIchael Pimentel, Sports Photographer – A self taught sports photographer who shot the 2004 Olympic Games. Oh, and he’s deaf. Which always reminds me of my friend/classmate Tristan (minus the Olympic shooting part). But he gives some pretty alright tips. Which is kind of up my alley right now, with this whole new ‘sports obsession’ thing I’ve picked up.

So this week was the first week that I worked on the school paper. While most of us had two articles published, I only had one (sadface) BUT! that wasn’t because of anything other than the fact that my second story is so awesome that it got pushed back until our Tuesday back (Jan. 31) so that I could do it the justice it deserves. (And up and coming athletes with Olympic ambitions deserves lots of justice).

Remember the daycare? The one with the ridiculously adorable children and the sign language? Well, I wrote a story to go with it, and then stuck a picture with it and voila! My first*  article published in a (n online) newspaper.

Image

The whole paper is here, if you’d like to check it out, and my story is on page four.

That should explain as to why I’ve basically been MIA. This is something so completely new and I haven’t been that drained at the end of a day in so long. Thank goodness we have the day off tomorrow for all the things I neglected to do during the week!

*actually it’s my second but the first was in a small town paper that doesn’t have a website, so I can’t flaunt that one

Things I’m Loving:

+ Blood Orange Margaritas – I don’t know if it’s because my friends are PhotoJ’s or if it’s because they’re half Mexican, but they drink tequila like water (in a classy way, of course). And I know they would love this. So, next up for Friday night drinks? 🙂

+ Houses By Night – This actually makes me think of those little Christmas villages, except DIY and cheaper. But I would totally make a set of these for my front windows and place them on the ledge inside. (Except the cat would knock them off and destroy them. 😦 )

+ Pitchside Photo – I’ve been through so many football (and for those of you who are like my father, I do mean soccer) blogs/articles/websites/etc. in the last few days I can’t even begin to tell you where I found this, but I love it. Paul shoots non-league football games, and you can really see the love that these players have for the sport.

+ Chairlift – Their second album can be streamed online for you to listen to. Do it! Do it now. Because it’s perfect for an evening with tea or hot chocolate and a good book.

His Girl Friday (but not really)
