Less Than ‘A Little’

The title really sums up how much sleep I’ve had in the last week. I got back to Belleville on Monday evening, went out for supper, and then 8 am class on Tuesday and it’s been almost non-stop since. Yet not in a ‘taking pictures’ sort of way. In a ‘you’re now running a paper, bring us all of the ideas’ sort of way that has me actually pounding out more words than clicking a shutter. Which, to be completely honest, is a nice change in pace. However, it also means that I have NONE OF THE PICTURES to post for you. Oh, wait. I may have one:

But, seriously. Between all the prep for the launch of the newspaper next Tuesday (don’t worry, I will link you), it’s been a whirlwind of writing and ideas and putting all the pieces together. Which, is quite fine by me. I’ve missed the whole writing part of all of this. Besides, writing does mean editorial, which means researching my newest love: women in professional sports and the discrepancy between men’s professional sports and women’s. (And here you thought I was all about just the pretty.)

Things I’m Loving:

+ The FOX Soccer Soccer Night in America Special – Which focuses on Women’s Pro Soccer (WPS) and how they’re gaining fans and how to help women’s pro sports, in general. Hands down my favourite video of the week. (And originally tweeted by @womensprosoccer)

+ 73 Letterpress – I don’t even know what to describe it as, other than a beautifully designed set of phrases I kind of want framed and scattered around my house. This one especially. And this one inspires me.

+ Jason Wu for Target –  Basically, I want it all. But especially #’s 11 – 14. Perfect blend of girl meets boy. (Except I am a student, so I’ll just go find similar pieces at Value Village. #likeaboss)

+ Sid Lowe – I am basically the last person to this party (but that’s not exactly surprising at this point), but ugh. I’ve got this new interest/fascination/addiction/what have you with sports journalism (and of course my sports I do mean football, but I digress) and I’ve basically gone through and read almost every single article of his in the last week. This has led me to the conclusion that sports journalism = art. It really is. So if you’re looking for me in the next few weeks, you’ll find me lost amongst all the football articles.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you. I hope you got to spend the holidays with the people who mean the most to you and that this new year brings all the best for you.

I know I haven’t posted in…weeks. I promised myself that I would post more when I was off from school and, well, apparently the opposite has happened. However! I do bring something a little different with this post.

A multimedia video that I did for my final project last semester that, actually, I’m quite happy with. I like the way it turned out and I’m really starting to get into the whole multimedia thing.

I hope you enjoy it, let me know what you think in the comments, and, hopefully! I’ll be back with more posts more often this year.

Things I’m Loving:

+ Year Long Exposure of Toronto Skyline – It really is dreamy and fairy tale-esque. Something I’m actually thinking I’d like to try at some point.

+ Tergiversate – It was the word of the year for 2011 and means: “to change repeatedly one’s attitude or opinions with respect to a cause, subject, etc.; equivocate.” A mix made by one of my favourite bloggers, Avalonne Hall, I think it’s a perfect blend to make one stop and pause for a few moments. And also discover some new music.

+ Le Foot Féminin – A blog based around everything related to female football (soccer). My younger sister is a female goalie, and I’m really starting to appreciate (more) how much dedication and energy and passion goes into female sports. Especially, or more truthfully, because of all the focus on men’s sports, female athletes need to work so much more in order to get that recognition and praise. And this blog is a wonderful place to find that.

+ Gat Rimon Lookbook Fall 2011 – Outfit #12 is my favourite. I’d wear that every day if I could. Well, almost. And the colour pallet is basically perfection.

+ New Year = NEW SHERLOCK!! Feelings. Feelings everywhere. I actually paused the new episode to update here, so I’m going to just….go back to feeling all the feelings about this show.

Talk With Your Hands

Image

I’ve been more than a little MIA lately, and for once I can honestly pinpoint that on the fact that school swallowed me up and then spit me back out and left me on the floor for a bit. (And by ‘the floor’ I do mean ‘Toronto International Airport’ where I bummed around for four hours. Trust me, not attractive.)

However! Before that happened, I took some pictures. Well, I met someone and then I took pictures. Sandra Lynds is a deaf day care worker at a daycare centre in town. Not only does she care for five deaf children when they arrive after school, but she also teaches the other children Sign during the day as she works.

Not only is that more than a bit impressive, but in the last five years, she’s also taught all of the other care workers at the centre how to Sign. Something that required a lot of patience, a lot of work, and made it more understandable to people who, to begin with, were a little scared about the fact that they didn’t know how to communicate with her.

I’ve been home for the last week. Well, flew in on Wednesday, got four teeth taken out on Thursday, home that evening, looking like the most adorable, high chipmunk that ever existed, and then found out Friday, after shooting my sister’s and brothers’ games, realized that I hadn’t packed my battery charger OR my card reader. Because I am the sharpest knife in the drawer, obviously.

But that’s okay! Because I’ll be getting new ones this week, and then back to shooting my family for my documentary project. Which I’ve been doing with a film camera. #likeaboss (I’ll let you know how it turns out.)

Things I’m Loving:

+ Being home with my family, and the snow, and the cold

+ TinTin Style – Who doesn’t love TinTin? I mean really. And now with the movie out, there’s a bit more hype over one of the best reporters, ever.

+ Sweet Paul Magazine – I haven’t looked through it completely, yet. But omg! the things look so fantastic and Christmas-y and I’ll be curled up with it in the next couple of days.

+ Christmas Gifts in a Jar – If you haven’t done all your Christmas shopping yet, here’s some quick DIY presents. And I know for a fact that, at least, I would love to have one of them. Perfect winter warmers.

+ Birdlips – If you’ve heard of them, you’re ahead of me. I just ‘discovered’ them yesterday and love their mellow sound. Check out their versions of Christmas music. So perfect, I’ve listened to them on repeat the last two days and love them. So does my mother, and that’s saying something.

It’s that time of year again, when the pile of assignments and exams are only outweighed by the desire for the winter break. This next week is going to be one of bottomless cups of coffee and way too many hours sitting in front of my computer, editing photographs and video to hand in before I leave next week.

However, in order to get all that footage, I got to be a guest in one of Belleville’s newest bake shops. Katerina’s Cakes & Treats opened this September and she was kind enough to let me visit for a couple of days and do some shooting. This is just a sample of what I took, and once the video’s put together, I’ll have that up here as well.

Things I’m Loving:

+ Why Christmas Music Doesn’t Have to Suck – Bruce Handy for Vanity Fair links you to youtube videos of Christmas music that doesn’t suck. Most of it is traditional and old school (and most of them I have on my iTunes already), but it’s definitely going to be my playlist for our Christmas party next week.

+ Black Spiced Rum Eggnog – Christmas and eggnog go hand in hand. And what’s better than making your own? This recipe is a lot more simple than I thought it would be, and adds a bit of a twist on traditional eggnog.

+ Scout’s Honor Co. – A fantastic blog with minimalistic posts on stationary, postage, illustration, etc. They’re shop is set to open up sometime in the next few months, and I’ll definitely be stopping by to pick up a few things.

+ Cape Town – I love capes. My love of capes can’t be properly described. And the last one on the list is one I’d wear on a consistent basis. Hopefully I’ll have one in my possession by the end of the winter season.

Christmas Parades…in November

Image

It wouldn’t be a Christmas parade (in November) without a clown, would it? Foxboro, Ontario had their Christmas parade (so short and sweet it was) on Saturday. My friends and I attended for some assignment pictures we needed and the clowns, without doubt, stole the hour long show.

Things I’m Loving:

+ Shimtokk – It’s now officially less than a month until Christmas.  Which means everyone’s starting to scurry around for ‘the perfect present’ for whoever it may be (hostess, best friend, mother, father, boy/girlfriend, grandma/pa, etc.). However, pretty/whimsical/handmade packaging can be just as much as a gift as anything. Sally and Joke will definitely give you some simple and easy ideas to package up those pretty presents you purchased.

+ Best Trips of 2012 – National Geographic is jumping the gun and skipping straight past Christmas. Instead, they’re heading into the New Year with 20 of the best places to go. Everything from the Olympics in London to Africa’s Virunga Volcanoes Massif and ‘Comeback Kid’ Dresden Germany, the list has something for everyone. I, personally, want to go see all twenty. #justsaying

+ Rainy Mood – Simply put: rain makes everything better. If it just happens to be ‘one of those days’, head on over and let the sound soothe you and be your background noise.

+ Great Gatsby inspired line – I don’t know if anyone else out there is as excited/worried as I am for this movie to come out (honestly: more worried than excited, but I’m now off track). However! The clothing it has inspired definitely has me excited. Elegant yet playful, dreamy with a bit of a serious edge, and definitely has a feeling for summer. I think Daisy would definitely approve.
