Favourite Photogs: Zack Seckler

I don’t know if photography can be labeled as ‘smart’ but that’s what I’d call Zack Seckler’s work.  Smart as in,”Wait is that….is that on purpose?” and ‘I see what you did there.” Where, at first glance, you’re not really sure you’re seeing what you’re seeing and so you look closer and yes, that is what you’re seeing and oh yes, it’s intentional. It’s funny and makes you stop for a second and makes me think of ‘child like’, like a kid playing around with photography. Which is a thought that might be helped by all the kids you see in his work.

Favourite Photogs: Sanaa Hamid

If I had to take a guess, which I’m going to, I’d say  Sanaa Hamid would be that person  you know who’s always on the go and generally has three projects going on and manages to keep them all fairly straight and she gets really, really excited talking about what she’s working on. It shows through the list of projects on the side of her website. With titles like, “My Body is Not Your Battleground”,  “Cultural Appropriation: A Conversation” and “Diasporic Cyanotypes” you can tell there’s some big topics she’s approaching with her photography. Each of them has her objective explained before the series of photos, which is great and helps explain what her vision is for each of these projects. 

Favourite Photogs: Jessica Hilltout

 

I first saw Jessica Hilltout‘s work in National Geographic, which is a recommendation in and of itself. And, if we’re going to be honest here, I was just wondering how football got included in NatGeo and then I read further and saw her pictures and well, here we are. Then I looked her up and saw the rest of her photographs from the project and was hooked. I mean, we knew that was inevitable, but this was away from the football part of it. This was on her photography and her vision and it stuck. 

Favourite Photogs: Thierry Bouët

I found Thierry Bouët‘s website buried in my bookmarks and it was kind of like finding an Easter egg a week after Easter’s gone by and all the good chocolate’s been eaten and then you sit down and dig around for the remote and, hmmmm, what’s this? And it’s a Cadbury Creme Egg (if you’re me) and…so that analogy just got out of hand. I’m sorry. But really, that’s what it’s like, finding good things hidden in your bookmarks. ANYWAYS. Bouët’s photography. I can’t decide what it is. Other than good, because it is that. But it’s also quirky. And clean. While being bright and punchy. It’s direct and a little in your face and….he’s French. Of course it’s all these things!

Favourite Photogs: Sara Naomi Lewkowicz

Most of the photography I share here is happy photography. Because people like happy photography, I like happy photography, with colours and design and panning. Of football and food and fashion. It’s easy to digest and quick to click through. Thing is though, there’s more to photography than just that. Sara Naomi Lewkowicz‘s photography is more than that. One of the things that was stressed over and over in my PhotoJ program is that, the true practice of photojournalism follows stories, all stories. From all the pretty and happy to the nitty gritty and heart strings tugging. Lewkowicz follows stories that are more of the latter nature. (TRIGGER WARNING: domestic violence after the jump.)
