Day Three & I’m Still Here

I started my internship on Monday. I’m actually three days in and still here. Which is, you know, a bonus and everything. I’ve learned a lot, too. In a ‘walked around downtown for three days straight’ kind of way, which is good for someone who did but didn’t know where things were.

You know when you’ve been to a place more times than you can count but you’re really bad with directions and for some reason have never really paid attention? No? Oh, maybe that’s just me. Anyways. I’ve done a lot of walking for Planet S’s Best Of issue coming out in a month and I don’t feel so much the country mouse in the city.

(Well, except yesterday when I got on the wrong #2 bus and went all the way to the opposite side of town before getting on the right #2 and going all the way back. Really wasn’t my finest moment.)

No, I can’t explain why all three of these places are bars/pubs. They just happen to be places that I told myself, as I was shooting, that I would like to go back to. Which might say something about me and the influences of my PhotoJ friends…hmmm…

Truth time: it’s weird not shooting back in Belleville. People there are used to all us crazy PhotoJs and our cameras, lenses hanging off of us like extra limbs. Saskatoon, not quite as used to it. No one said anything, but it’s something you can just tell, the eyes sliding past you as you stand on the side of the street, juggling lenses as you’re changing them and praying that, if the lens cap does fall, it’ll fall the right way so no dirt gets on it. The little things, you know?

I’m getting along with everyone here, though. In a ‘we like the same music and T.V. shows even though we’re 30 years apart’ kind of way where we were cracking jokes after 20 minutes. I don’t know, I’d say that that’s a good way to start.

Things I’m Loving:

+ Colour Palette Generator – You know those colour scheme bars that are popping up on blogs everywhere lately? This is a nifty place to get your own and be the envy of everyone who isn’t in on that little secret (like I was).

+ Light Wheat Bread - Because there is nothing, and I do mean nothing, better than fresh bread with butter melting on it. Nothing. Except if there’s fresh milk to go with it, then it just got better.

+ Pomedôro Bowties – The last thing I need is another bow tie. I don’t, I really don’t. But I would really like one, especially this one or this one.

+ AP 30 Photographers to Watch –  Quite a few photojournalistic shots in there, which is always nice to see.

assignment, random, saskatoon, school, sports, spring, travel

More catching up to do. With school finishing up I just ran out of time. However: that’s now done! I’m no longer in the land of sun and summer temperatures (aka Ontario) but rather cold and sharp winds (aka Saskatchewan). I flew out on Wednesday afternoon, leaving the high 20C weather and landing…here. Where it is cold and grey and not feeling like summer. All to say: hopefully posts will (once again) become more consistent!

But before that happens, just a quick post to cover all the random tidbits that have happened over the last month:

March 7:

My first professional football game. (Yes, it’s football. Drives my family batty.) Toronto FC got the lead in the first half and then LA Galaxy equalized, but we won on the return leg in LA. (Oh, wait. I’m supposed to be impartial as a journalist…hmmmm…) They don’t allow long lenses in the stands which is why these are ridiculous and far away, but one day I’ll be shooting from behind the GK and we’ll be able to look back at these and smile.

March 14:

Grad photos! Since we’re ‘professional’ photojournalists, we decided that we could use the studio that we have available to take our own grad pictures. Which we did. Which I still need to get my hands on, actually….

March 16:

Image

A make up assignment where I had to shoot a woman in a non-traditional job. So I managed to find Valerie Putter who’s been a mechanic for the last six years. Pretty kick-ass, right?

Misc. Date:

Image

A last look at my wall before I left. Drawings from home, Christmas/Valentine’s Day/birthday/just because cards. Two calendars just because (and between the two of them I cover English, German, Spanish and French. It’ll be sad if I don’t know the days of the week by the end of the year).

So that’s it. I’m done. I go home today and then start my internship at Planet S on Monday. One month there and then I’m officially and completely done with school. Onwards to the next adventure!

Things I’m Loving:

+ Barbequed Maple Balsamic Burger - Because even if it doesn’t feel like it here, spring is here and summer will be chasing closely. And what, may I ask you, is more summery than burgers? Other than the beach and a tan with weird lines down your back because your tank top straps got in the way. Nothing.

+ Kate Digilio’s Archive – I’m actually listening to her thaw spring mix right now. I might just be really easy to please with mixes, but I’ve listened to this one four times already, all the way through. I packed to it. And, on Tuesday, it went perfectly with hot temperatures and bright sunshine.

+ “i like my body when it is with your” by e.e. cummings – My friend sent me this the other day and I had forgotten how much I love cummings. Maybe because, unlike me, he abuses grammar and I get a sense of difference from it, but I’ve always just loved how his poems look, how they sound. No different here.

+ Iox Papers – A charming little blog with photosets galore. I love photosets. Maybe because I’ve tried a few times and just fail or because there’s time spent into finding all the things to put in the things in the first place, but I love hers.

+ Community – The TV show is baaaack! We’ve already got two new episodes (the second of which I will be watching right after this) but I am so glad! My Greendale crew is back with all their sarcasm and Inspector Spacetime.

fourth semester, published!!, random, school, sports, winter

It’s been ages since I’ve updated. I actually forget what it’s like to have to sit down and create a blog post. Mostly because I keep feeling like I have nothing to blog about, after which I turn around and realize that, actually, I have quite a few things and now I’m going to have to wait to post them all.  I am excited to post about them though, so hopefully there’ll start being less time between posts! Yay!

So, since that last post, there’s been two more editions of the school paper. Our last two editions, actually. Tuesday’s. Thursday’s. I’m actually kind of proud of the things I produced, to be honest. I finally got to have my Athletes to Watch story printed, the one I started the first week we were on the paper and that I’ve just been waiting to complete. I also ended up making a multimedia weather feature video and did a streeter, two things that I hadn’t done up until this last week. All in all: a good way to finish.

The video to go with the weather feature can be found here. For some reason, which I think can be blamed on it being Monday, I’ve completely forgotten how to embed a video into a blog post.

Things I’m Loving:

+ Please Forgive My Heart  by Bobby Womack  - Absolutely love this. It’s soothing and perfect to just de-stress to and soak up the warm feeling.

+ Vitamin Boosters – This is my last week of classes. And then I’m done. Which is scary-exciting. Scary because I have none of the things completed (actually, not completely true. WHICH IS NICE!) and exciting because it means I get to start new things. Mostly it just means I’m going to be tired, so definitely going to be trying one (or all) of these!

+ MLS: First-Kick - The Guardian’s look at this last week of MLS. Which is back for the 2012 season. Which I am very excited about. Especially since I was at Wednesday’s quarter finals between Toronto FC and LA Galaxy and ugh. ANYWAYS: MLS. It is here and you should see what’s up.

+  Ginnifer Goodwin – I adore Ginnifer Goodwin. In that ‘everything she wears is perfect. Excuse me while I get a similar haircut’ kind of way. And those are just three reasons why I adore her.

Things I Have Been Doing (That Are Not Updating My Blog)

It’s been more than a week since I’ve updated, I know. And I wish I could say I’ve been doing things like, oh, I don’t know, exciting things. Like going to the city or a road trip or home or even outside. Except I haven’t been doing any of those things. Well, I have gone outside. I think the first time was Tuesday afternoon sometime, in all honesty.

Which, in turn, means no pictures to show you. However! Because I wanted to post something and I was getting worried that my blog was going to start having cobwebs on it or something equally scary.  Which is what the next picture is.

Image

Instead of taking pictures, I have been (from top left):

- receiving and writing letters

- catching on my reading, right now it’s The Beautiful & Damned  by F. Scott Fitzgerald, previously it was A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin

- writing, just little fics and stories, nothing special

- the iPod represents all the Cabin Pressure I’ve been listening to. On repeat. Repeating the repeat. Episode 1 Part 1 is here.

- yes, that’s a Babar calendar. Which is awesome. What’s even more so is the fact that I got it for 75% off. I’ve been updating all the assignments and internship things I need to keep in line for the next month.

- all the magazines I’ve been catching up on. Between the football, the fashion and the photography magazines, there’s a great stack I get to go through because the rest of the time I’m in school.

Image

Then there’s the shoes. Ah, shoes. Not the ones you’d really wear with all the outfits, but the ones you wear to pound the pavement. Which I have been doing. Because even though I have not been taking pictures, I started running. Every day this week. Like, wake up, roll out of bed, put on running clothes and out the door sort of running. No, it’s not pretty, no I’m actually not a smoker though my lungs keep exploding like over blown balloons, but yes my legs ache and yes, I do feel really, really good. We’ll see how it goes next week when I’m actually in school and not getting up at noon, but instead, well, earlier. I’m crossing my fingers though!

Things I’m Loving:

+ Well, previously mentioned: Cabin Pressure – If you like radio shows or comedy or Benedict Cumberbatch, or if you like comedic radio shows starring Benedict Cumberbatch, listen. Because it’s fabulous.

+ Among the Asexuals – “In a society obsessed with sex, it’s hard if you have no sexual desire at all. Some are searching for a new form of intimacy.” Quite a thought provoking article on a topic not too many people have spent a lot of thought on.

+ The Beautiful Gear - Because the beautiful game (aka: soccer/football/whatever you call it) has beautiful gear. Which I keep resisting, or attempting to resist. This site makes it so-oo-oo much more difficult.

+ 50 of the World’s Best Breakfasts – Breakfast is the best part of the morning, let’s be honest. Nobody actually really likes being up that early, unless there’s breakfast. Yes, I would get up for (most of) those breakfasts. Egypt’s, Sweden’s, England’s, France’s, Turkey’s, Germany’s, you know, to name a few.
